Road Safety Engineering
Safety Schemes
The purpose of a Safety Scheme is to reduce the number of road collisions and casualties. However it may also have other benefits like improving the road environment or providing better integration between various modes of transport.
Having selected an appropriate measure or package of measures to deal with the cause of collisions or road safety issues the next stage is the detailed design and implementation of the proposals. A Safety Scheme may involve simple things like adding a new sign or road markings, or more complex things like changing the layout or geometry of the road. Works can be implemented at single sites, such as a junction improvement scheme, along routes such as a speed limit or over an area such as a traffic calming scheme.
PAF have been responsible for the design of a significant number of successful safety schemes both in the urban and rural environment and on all classes of road hierarchy some which include:
- A65 Cumbria (40mph speed limit, pedestrian/cycle facilities, right turn lane, traffic islands, improved signing and road markings)
- A65 North Yorkshire (interactive signing)
- A65 Lancashire/North Yorkshire/Cumbria (route safety measures)
- A646 West Yorkshire (provision of pedestrian refuge and cycle facilities)
- A585 Lancashire (carriageway widening, and junction improvement)
- A59, Penwortham (toucan crossing, junction improvement, right turn lanes, gap closures and Traffic Regulation Orders)
- M6 Lancashire (junction improvement)
- Stockport (traffic calming scheme)
- Preston (quality bus improvements)
